Physical Education

Our Subject Leader is Mr Codd.

“The more difficult the victory, the greater the happiness in winning.” – Pelé

Intent

At Upperby Primary School, we want our children to develop a lifelong love of Physical Education and sport. We aim to help pupils understand that participation in physical activity can lead to a wide range of future opportunities and careers, including personal training, nutrition, sports journalism, physiotherapy, and elite athletics.

A high-quality Physical Education curriculum inspires all pupils to challenge themselves through competitive sport and physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for children to become physically confident, active, and healthy, while learning about their bodies and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Opportunities to compete in sport help to build character and embed key values such as fairness, respect, and teamwork.

Our PE curriculum has been carefully crafted to ensure pupils develop and progress their skills over time. We want children to remember their PE lessons, embrace the opportunities available to them, understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and aspire to achieve their full sporting potential.

Implementation

Physical Education at Upperby Primary School is carefully planned and sequenced to ensure that knowledge and skills build progressively as pupils move through their learning journey. Subject-specific vocabulary is explicitly taught and reinforced within lessons.

We place a high priority on swimming and water safety, providing additional swimming opportunities throughout Key Stage 2 to ensure pupils leave our school with secure water safety skills.

Within lessons, pupils are supported to practise and master physical skills, while also developing their ability to evaluate their own performance and that of others. We encourage participation in both intra-school and inter-school competitions, including opportunities for pupils to compete at regional and national levels.

A range of extra-curricular sports clubs is offered and reviewed on a half-termly basis to meet pupils’ interests. We use the PE and Sport Premium effectively to maximise participation in physical activity and to enhance our facilities, equipment, and sporting provision.

Impact

Pupils are assessed against lesson objectives outlined in medium-term planning, ensuring skills in Physical Education are progressive and build year-on-year. Assessment information is used to inform future learning and curriculum development. The subject leader monitors assessment outcomes and provides support for staff to ensure continued progress.

By the end of Upper Key Stage 2, pupils leave Upperby Primary School with a positive attitude towards Physical Education and physical activity, alongside the knowledge and understanding needed to lead a healthy, active lifestyle.
