Geography
Our Geography subject leader is Mr Stokes.

“The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world.” – Michael Palin
Our long-term plan and related overviews are currently being updated after a redesign to reflect the needs of our new mixed classes. Once available, they will be published here.
Intent
At Upperby Primary School, we aim to inspire and motivate our pupils to understand the world they live in and the impact they can have on it, developing geographers of the future. Geography is vital as it provides a way to explore, appreciate, and understand the world and how it has evolved.
By introducing pupils to different aspects of the world, we stimulate their curiosity and imagination, helping them understand people, places, and environments; the interactions between them; and the human and physical geography of their local area, the United Kingdom, Europe, and the wider world. We aim to broaden pupils’ horizons, deepen their understanding, and nurture responsible future citizens.
Implementation
Our geography curriculum is carefully designed to ensure knowledge and skills build progressively as pupils move through school. We use Oddizzi as the core of our teaching, supplemented by activities from Connected Geography.
Our enquiry-based approach develops age-appropriate skills while providing regular opportunities for challenge.
-
Key Stage 1: Pupils develop knowledge about their local area, the United Kingdom, and the wider world. They learn basic geographical vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin using geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance locational awareness.
-
Key Stage 2: Pupils extend their understanding beyond the local area, exploring significant human and physical features around the world. They develop and apply geographical vocabulary, knowledge, and skills to enrich their locational and place knowledge.
Impact
Pupils are assessed against performance descriptors mapped for each year group, ensuring skills and understanding build progressively. Assessment informs future learning and curriculum development. The subject leader monitors progress and supports staff to ensure continued pupil achievement.
