Design and Technology

Our D&T subject leader is Mrs Lawson.

“Everyone has ideas. The hard part is making them happen.” – James Dyson

Intent

At Upperby Primary School, we want our children to develop a love of Design and Technology and to grow up aspiring to be architects, graphic designers, chefs, carpenters, and other creative professionals. Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous, and practical subject that encourages children to explore ideas and solve real-life problems.

Through DT, we aim to develop pupils who are confident risk-takers and who become resourceful, innovative, enterprising, and capable citizens.

Implementation

The Design and Technology curriculum at Upperby Primary School has been carefully designed to ensure pupils progressively build their skills, knowledge, and understanding as they move through the school.

Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that address real and relevant problems in a range of contexts. They are encouraged to consider their own needs, as well as the needs, wants, and values of others, while following the full design process of research, design, making, and evaluation.

To enhance our food technology provision, we work in partnership with Phunky Foods, supporting pupils to develop a deeper understanding of nutrition, food preparation, and healthy lifestyles.

Throughout the curriculum, pupils develop a broad range of subject knowledge and draw upon learning from mathematics, science, engineering, computing, and art. This cross-curricular approach strengthens problem-solving skills and supports meaningful learning.

We aim for children to enjoy and remember their Design and Technology lessons and to confidently embrace the DT opportunities they encounter both within school and beyond.

Impact

Assessment in Design and Technology is carefully mapped across each year group to ensure that skills and understanding develop progressively as pupils move through the school. Children build on prior learning year-on-year, becoming more confident and capable designers and makers.

Assessment information is used to monitor progress and to inform future curriculum development, ensuring that provision continues to meet the needs of all learners. The Design and Technology subject leader supports staff through guidance and professional development, helping to maintain high standards and consistent progress across the school.

As a result, pupils develop strong practical skills, technical knowledge, and a positive attitude towards Design and Technology, preparing them well for future learning and real-life applications.

Each Year group completes their D&T project every second half term.

Phunky Foods

Phunky Foods is a national healthy-lifestyle programme used by primary schools to support children’s learning about healthy eating, nutrition, physical activity and wellbeing. It provides engaging curriculum resources, practical activities, lesson plans and workshops designed specifically for early years and primary-aged children (ages 4 -11). The programme encourages children to make positive choices about food and activity in a fun, lively way, helping them and their families adopt healthier habits that can last a lifetime.

In school, Phunky Foods is used to support the cooking and nutrition elements of our Design and Technology and Health curriculum. Sessions and assemblies are delivered in an interactive way, and the programme also offers ideas for parents and pupils to explore what they have learned at home.
