Pupil Leadership and Responsibility

As part of our citizenship education, we believe that children need opportunities to experience the duties and responsibilities that come with being a member of a community. This helps them develop important life skills and prepares them to play an active role as responsible citizens.

At Upperby, we offer a range of leadership opportunities for our Year 6 pupils, including:

  • Head Girl and Head Boy
  • Deputy Head Girl and Deputy Head Boy
  • Prefects
  • House Captains
  • Reading Ambassadors
  • Sports Leaders

These roles are highly valued and considered a privilege. Pupils who are successful in gaining these positions are expected to act as positive role models and ambassadors for the school.

These opportunities allow Year 6 pupils to demonstrate leadership, responsibility and commitment, whilst also providing younger children with positive examples to follow.

In addition to these Year 6 roles, pupils across Key Stage 2 have the opportunity to serve as School Councillors and Eco Committee Representatives. These important positions enable children to contribute to decision-making within the school, represent the views of their peers, and help lead initiatives that improve our school environment and promote sustainability.

Applying for a Leadership Role

Pupils are given the opportunity to apply for leadership positions appropriate to their year group. Applications go through a selection process, and successful candidates are announced during a whole-school assembly at the beginning of the academic year.

Expectations

All pupils holding positions of responsibility are expected to:

  • Lead by example at all times
  • Demonstrate excellent behaviour
  • Show respect towards others
  • Wear their school uniform with pride
  • Carry out their duties reliably and responsibly

Recognising Success

All leadership roles are monitored throughout the year. Pupils who demonstrate commitment and carry out their responsibilities successfully will receive recognition and rewards each term.

We are incredibly proud of our pupil leaders and the positive contribution they make to school life. Their enthusiasm, responsibility and dedication help make Upperby a welcoming, inclusive and successful school community for everyone.
