Physical Education
Our Subject Leader is Mr Codd.
Intent
At Upperby Primary School, we want our children to love physical education and sport. We aim to support them to understand that physical education could lead them to many careers: personal trainers, nutritionists, sports journalists, physiotherapists, or even gold medal winning athletes. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to try their best in competitive sport and physically demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident and active in a way which supports their health and fitness. Children also learn about their bodies and how to keep them healthy. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. The PE curriculum has been carefully crafted so that our children develop and progress. We want our children to remember their PE lessons in our school, embrace the opportunities they are presented with, know the importance of a healthy lifestyle and aspire to become sportspeople.
Implementation
Physical Education at Upperby Primary School has been designed for our pupils and carefully mapped out to ensure the building blocks of knowledge and skills are built upon as each child progresses through their learning journey. A rich vocabulary is used with specific vocabulary planned into lessons. We place a high priority on providing additional swimming lessons throughout Key Stage 2 to ensure our children have had the opportunity to acquire secure water safety skills before the leave our school.
Children have the opportunity in lessons to master skills and also evaluate themselves and others performance.
We encourage the children to take part in both inter and intra competitive sport competitions, including some of our gymnastics team taking part at National Level competitions. We offer extra-curricular clubs which differ on a half termly basis.
We use Sports Premium to maximise the opportunities for children to participate in physical activity and to enhance our space and equipment on offer.
Impact
The pupils are assessed against lesson objectives outlined on Medium Term Plans. Skills in Physical Education are progressive and built on year on year. Assessment information is used to inform future learning opportunities and curriculum developments. The subject leader monitors assessments and provides support for staff to ensure continued progress. Children leave UKS2 with a positive attitude towards Physical Education, Physical Activity and know how to lead a healthy lifestyle.
