Computing
Our Computing subject leader is Miss Dixon.

“Everyone in this country should learn how to program a computer, because it teaches you how to think.” – Steve Jobs
Intent
At Upperby Primary School, we aim to ensure that all pupils have access to a rich and engaging Computing curriculum. We want our children to understand and confidently participate in a world increasingly influenced by technology. Our curriculum develops pupils’ knowledge, skills, and understanding so they can adapt to a rapidly changing digital landscape.
Through Computing, pupils become more computer-literate, enabling them to conceptualise, understand, and use technology effectively. This prepares them not only for today’s world but also for the technological challenges and opportunities of the future.
Implementation
Computing lessons at Upperby Primary School focus on developing pupils’ knowledge and skills across the three strands of the National Curriculum: Digital Literacy, Information Technology, and Computer Science. Lessons also provide opportunities for children to apply computing skills to support learning in other subjects.
We follow the condensed Computing curriculum from Kapow, which ensures progression across all year groups. Online safety is taught throughout the year using themed Internet Safety Days, supported by the Project Evolve scheme and resources from National Online Safety. This helps pupils understand real-life scenarios and make safe, responsible choices online.
Children and staff have access to a wide range of hardware and software to support learning, including tablets, PCs, laptops, and programmable robots. This hands-on approach allows pupils to develop both practical and conceptual skills in computing.
Impact
Pupils are assessed against carefully mapped performance descriptors for each year group. Skills and understanding build progressively, year-on-year, and assessment information is used to inform future learning and curriculum development.
The Computing subject leader monitors assessment data and supports staff to ensure all pupils make continued progress. In addition, pupil voice and class mind maps are used to evaluate the impact of the curriculum and to identify areas for further development.
As a result, pupils gain confidence and competence in Computing, leaving Upperby Primary School ready to use technology safely and creatively across all areas of learning.

Celebrating Safer Internet Day 2026

Safer Internet Day 2026 – Tuesday 10th February
This year, the theme is “Smart Tech, Safe Choices”, focusing on exploring the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). Pupils across the school will take part in activities and discussions designed to help them use technology confidently, safely, and responsibly.
Here is a clip from a previous year based around the theme 'Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online'.
Be Internet Legends Day takes place on 11th November 2025. Our annual flagship event is back, and this year the focus is on how to be kind online. Parents and children across the school are invited to take part in a live workshop.
Take a look at some images from Be Internet Legends in previous years! If you missed the event this year, keep an eye out for future opportunities to join in and celebrate online safety with us.
