Medical Information

Accidents and Illness in School

If your child becomes ill during the school day or has an accident, you will be notified as soon as possible.

It is essential that we have up-to-date emergency contact details. We require three emergency contact numbers for every child.

Parents/carers will always be informed if their child has suffered a bang or injury to the head, or if an injury is serious enough to require an accident report to be sent to the Local Authority.

When your child starts school, you will be asked to provide details of your address, telephone numbers, place of work, and the contact details of a friend or neighbour in case we are unable to reach you. These details will be checked and updated at the beginning of each academic year. If your contact details change during the year, please inform the school as soon as possible.

If your child is unwell and unable to attend school, please notify us by telephone on the morning of the absence. If we do not receive a reason for your child’s absence, it may be marked as unauthorised. If you are unsure whether your child is well enough to attend school, please send them in.

Medical Conditions

If your child has been diagnosed with a lifelong medical condition, please inform the school immediately. Depending on the condition, you may be asked to provide confirmation from your GP or consultant. This may lead to the creation of a Health Care Plan, developed in partnership with parents/carers, the school, and relevant health professionals, to ensure your child receives appropriate care and support while in school.

Medicines in School

In exceptional circumstances where a child needs to take medicine during the school day, the following procedures apply:

  • Please inform the class teacher.

  • Medicines must be handed in at the School Office, where you will be asked to complete and sign a consent form.

  • Medicines will be stored securely in the School Office.

If there is no Administration Officer available, another member of staff will provide the necessary form. While every effort will be made to ensure children receive their medication at the correct time, the school cannot accept responsibility if it is forgotten. Older children are expected to remember to ask for their medicine.

If you are concerned about this, you are welcome to come into school to administer the medicine yourself.

Medicines will only be administered if they are clearly labelled with:

  • the child’s name

  • the name of the medicine

  • the dosage required

  • the time the dose should be taken

All medicines must be collected by a parent/carer at the end of the school day.

Please note that we are unable to administer aspirin-based medicines (such as Calpol) unless they have been prescribed by a GP.

If your child requires regular medication for a lifelong condition, please inform the school so that appropriate arrangements can be made. This will involve completing an administering medicines form. In some cases, medication may be stored in school and children supervised while self-administering.

Asthma

Children with asthma must have their own inhaler in school at all times, which should be clearly labelled and easily accessible. The school is permitted to keep emergency salbutamol inhalers for use if a child’s own inhaler is unavailable or has run out.

Emergency inhalers will only be used with parental permission, which requires completion of a consent form. Parents/carers will be informed if an emergency inhaler has been used. These inhalers are for emergency use only.

It is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure their child’s inhaler is in date and in working order.

Allergies

We have several children in school with allergies, including allergies to nuts and animals. For their safety and wellbeing, we are a NUT-FREE SCHOOL.
