Year 6 - Hogwarts

Welcome to Hogwarts!

Our teacher is Miss Taylor. 

Our teaching assistants are Mrs Simpson and Mrs Fleming. 


Our PE days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. 


Please make sure you have your full kit for these days, including trainers. 






Homework is given out on a Friday to be returned the following Friday. 

There will be spellings, grammar, comprehension and a maths activity each week. 

You can practise your spellings and times tables on Spelling Shed or Times Table Rockstars at any point in the week!

Summer 1

In History we have been investigating the life of the ancient Mayans and how their lives changed over the course of thousands of years. We discovered that the Mayans used to play a game called Pok-a-Tok which is a little like football. They used their elbows, thighs and knees to hit a ball into a hoop. It looked tricky but we gave it a good go in some games of our own with mixed success! 

We now know that the Mayans were some of the cleverest earliest civilsations. They had their own alphabet and number system which we tried out by doing some arithmetic and writing our names. Can you guess what each of the symbols means? 

Spring 2

This half term in Science we have been learning about animals and how they evolve. We looked at DNA which is inside everyone and makes us unique. We wanted to find some DNA so we set about finding the DNA from bananas! We had to mush up our banana first, then add in water, salt and detergent. Then we filtered our banana mush before adding alcohol to activate the DNA. We could see tiny white strands in our beakers - although the smell was horrible!! 

We investigated how fossils are made over thousands of years and then had a go at creating our own using plaster of paris and our artistic skills to draw out some dinosaur bones in modelling clay. Once the plaster had dried, we were able to peel our mould away and we were left with a fossil! 

Spring 1

This half term we have been investigating electricity. We made circuits using electrical components and drew diagrams - investigating how parallel and series circuits affected an output. We also looked at static electricity and had a go at creating some of our own using our hair and a balloon. We found that they stuck to the wall quite well!


In Art we have been trying some still-life drawing techniques. Including taking photos of our subjects, changing the colour using technology, then drawing our objects using charcoal, pencil and watercolour. 

Autumn 2

In DT we designed and made Christmas decorations from felt to hang on our Christmas trees. First, we looked at existing Christmas decorations and decided what their best features were, before designing our own. We then had to cut carefully around our templates and sew on any additional embellishments we wanted for our designs. Then we stitched them together, leaving a hole for our stuffing. We were really proud of our final designs!

In Art we drew faces based on the art of Kathe Kollwitz. We looked at how lots of her subjects looked in pain, or angry and drew our own self portraits with these expressions. Then we made our own clay faces from our drawings. 

In our Geography lessons we have been learning about earthquakes. We learnt that seismographs measure when an earthquake occurs and make a mark to show the impact of the earthquake. We were challenged to make our own seismographs out of classroom objects as you can see below.

Autumn 1

This term we are exploring dance in PE and learning about the Charleston - a famous dance from the 1920s which was still performed during WWII. So far we have learnt the basic steps and then looked at canons and retrograde to start adding to our routines in our groups. 



In PSHE we have been thinking of ways to be kind to others and helping to solve friendship problems. We came across some problems of our own when we were challenged to build a bridge that could hold a dictionary using only felt tip pens and sellotape! It involved lots of cooperation but we succeeded and many bridges could even hold more than one dictionary!
