Our Geography subject leader is Mr Dixon

 

Intent 

At Upperby Primary School we seek to inspire and motivate our pupils to understand the world in which they live and the impact they can have on the world, developing geographers of the future.  Geography is important in our school as it provides a means of exploring, appreciating and understanding the world in which we live and how it has evolved.  By introducing our pupils to different aspects of the world, we stimulate their curiosity and imagination and enable them to better understand its people, places and environments; the interactions between then; the human and physical geography of their local area, the united Kingdom, Europe and the Wider World.  We aim to widen pupils horizons on the world, deepening their understanding and developing more responsible citizens of the future.

 

Implementation 

 

Geography at Upperby Primary School has been designed for our pupils and carefully mapped out to ensure the building blocks of knowledge and skills are built upon as each child progresses through their learning journey. We use 'Oddizzi' as the basis for our geography teaching, supplemented by activities from 'Connected Geography'.

 

Our enquiry based geography curriculum develops progressive skills, ensuring that our pupils are accessing work at age-related expectations, with regular opportunities to be challenged.

 

At Key Stage 1, our pupils develop knowledge about their own locality, the United Kingdom and the World.  They can understand basic subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness.

 

At Key Stage 2, our pupils extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area.  This includes the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features.  Our pupils develop their use of geographical vocabulary, knowledge, understanding and skills to enrich their locational and place knowledge.

 

Impact 

The pupils are assessed against the performance descriptors for each year groups, which have been carefully mapped out.  Skills and understanding in Geography are progressive and built on each year.  Assessment information is used to inform future learning opportunities and curriculum developments.  The subject leader monitors assessments and provides support for staff to ensure continued progress.

 

Year 5 Geography field trip - Great Corby and Denton Holme 22.6.22

Year 5 spent all day exploring Great Corby and Denton Holme gathering the information to answer the questions they had chosen to decide which was the better place to live.

A place called home - Reception and Year 1 

Our children in Reception/Year 1 have looking at how homes around the world our similar and different to their own. They also made plans of their own bedrooms. 

Mugrameno to Upperby - Year 2 

 

Our Year 2 children have been exploring the differences between a Zambian village and their home town of Carlisle- they've displayed some of their fantastic work. 

Year 5 - Mountains

In Year 5 the children have been finding out how mountains are formed, how fossils were found on the top of Mount Everest, whether Mallory and Irving were the first to climb Everest and how to use six figure grid references to locate features on maps.
