Intent

We believe that it is essential that our pupils can not only learn about other cultures but also begin to communicate and express themselves in another language and we focus on French.  We want to help to create linguists who foster a love of languages through speaking, listening and later moving on to reading and writing.  A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.  The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to other pupils speaking French.

Implementation

We use interactive activities to encourage pupils to speak and sing in French, moving onto reading and writing in French as they develop secure speaking skills.   The children in Year 3- 6 are currently in the second year of French and the teaching is adjusted to ensure children build their skills across the Key Stage.

Our pupils will be given opportunities to explore the patterns and sounds of French through songs and rhymes, listen attentively and engage in conversations.  They will begin to show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing whilst broadening their vocabulary.

Impact

Pupils will be supported to read, speak, write and respond to words and phrases from memory and adapt these to express ideas clearly.

The pupils are assessed against the performance descriptors for each year groups which have been carefully mapped out ensuring the skills in French are progressive.  Assessment information is used to inform further curriculum developments and provision is adapted accordingly.  The subject leader monitors assessments and provides support for staff to ensure continued progress.
